Remembering Reuben
“In January 2020 I lost my big brother Reuben to suicide. Since then I've found myself reckoning with the reasons why this happened, I continue to go through the motions of grief, telling myself I could've done more, feeling anger towards myself, others and blaming my loss on the lack of resources and support for young people, especially for young black men.
Ultimately, whilst all the above may be true there's nothing I can do that will change his narrative and bring him back and sadly there's lots that will remain unsolved for me and all those who knew him. We will continue tussle with the grief of never truly knowing why.
I can however choose to remember my brother in the joyous and fun filled way that I experienced him throughout my life. I can also do that and raise money for a cause that is changing the narrative for others by providing access to therapy, thus working in a proactive and preventative way. As a therapist myself, I couldn’t be happier to know this exists.
So here's my exhilarating big leap into remembering Reuben and raising funds for a cause that is so so close to my heart.”
