In Jamaica it’s called Pardner. In West Africa, Ajo. In Trinidad, Sou-Sou. Across the diaspora, the same idea: a group of people put in what they can, week after week, and the fund holds everyone up.

When the Windrush generation arrived in Britain after the war, they were turned away from banks and refused loans. So they built their own system. They pooled what they had. They trusted each other. And they built homes, businesses, and futures out of it.

Pardner Hand is BMMUK’s version of that tradition. We can’t draw down a mortgage from it. What we can do is pool what we have, month after month, and use it to pay for therapy for Black people who can’t otherwise access it. It’s the same idea our grandparents already knew worked.

Where the money goes

Every pound you give into Pardner Hand stays in the fund. It pays for therapy sessions with Black therapists, matched to Black individuals and families who couldn’t otherwise afford or access culturally appropriate support.

Unlike a traditional Pardner, there’s no drawdown. You don’t get your money back. What you do get is the knowledge that your contribution is in a fund that holds someone else up the way the original Pardner held our families up.

That’s the trade. Your £1 a month becomes part of a fund that keeps going, month after month, person after person.

  • On 22 June 1948, the HMT Empire Windrush brought hundreds of Commonwealth citizens from the Caribbean to help rebuild Britain after the war.

    Despite their hard work, many were denied bank accounts and loans because they had no UK credit history, making things like buying a home nearly impossible. So, the community pulled together and created Pardner Hand, a simple, trust-based savings club where everyone chipped in to help each other get ahead.

  • The Pardner Hand is rooted in traditions of mutual support within Black communities, where people come together to pool resources and uplift one another. By using this model, we’re not only raising funds but also building solidarity and accountability. It reflects the belief that mental health is not an isolated journey but a collective act of healing.

  • The vision is simple: 100,000 people each giving £1 a month. That’s £100,000 a month in the fund, every month,

    paying for therapy for Black people across the UK. We’re not there yet. We’re building towards it. Every person who joins gets us closer.

  • Your contribution goes directly towards providing free, culturally appropriate therapy sessions for Black individuals across the UK.

    Just like in a traditional pardner, your monthly contribution helps someone today, and builds a system that can support you or your loved ones tomorrow.

  • In addition to your monthly contribution, you can support the Pardner Hand by spreading the word within your networks, family, friends, workplaces, and community groups. Every conversation helps break the stigma around mental health and brings more people into the Pardner Hand community.

  • This campaign draws on the Caribbean Pardner hand tradition, but differs in one key aspect: contributions / donations are gifts that remain with BMMUK and are not returned to donors. The money remains in the fund to provide therapy for the Black community. Unlike the original system, there is no drawdown.
